How to use hair gel

Hair gel is a styling product designed to create movement and hold hair in place. It can also be used to slick hair back or tame flyaway pieces. And seeing as it’s not just for men, we tell you ladies how to use it.

Styling gels are great way of adding texture, body and shine and can be found in different strengths. This means you can choose between one with a stronger hold and one that’s more flexible. “For example, for a simple roughed-up effect, a medium-hold gel will do. For slick, structured styles, you’ll need a strong hold. You could maybe even add hairspray for extra hold.”

First things first though, gel is used mainly on short hair. “Gel is not designed for long hair. Unless you use a huge amount, I don’t see how it can be used to provide long-lasting hold on mid-lengths and ends. There are other products that are a lot more suitable, such as hairsprays for styling and fixing in place.”

To create a wet-look effect, use a medium-hold gel to avoid hair going stiff. “Place a small amount of gel between your hands then work through your hair until you achieve the result you’re after. This works best when hair is damp.” To accentuate the shiny effect of your wet look, why not mix your gel with a little bit of hair serum.

For ultra-slick styles, use a strong-hold gel to pull your hair back and fix with hairspray to make sure your style lasts all day. “Apply the gel section by section for a superbly structured style.”

Our tip: Distribute the gel evenly throughout your hair to stop it turning stiff. This effect is not natural and certainly not attractive! Then apply the gel using your fingers for as much precision as possible.

STREET STYLE

White blond for a rock-chick haircut

Her look? Both glamorous and rock-chick. Our streetstyle of the day is not shy and dares to wear bright colours despite her almost-white blond. A risky bet, but she pulls it off thanks to her skin tone. If her skin were too fair, the contrast would be too striking and the result wouldn’t have been as successful. Here, the bright red lips, teamed with her clothes, top off the look!

Her hairstyle? Hair is cut short for a chic, tomboy style. We love the depth to her white blond and her hairstyle, which is both rock-chick and girly at the same time. To keep her blond looking so radiant, our streetstyle has obviously looked after it. If you don’t use treatments for coloured hair, your colour could end up looking dull. This would be a shame for a colour that’s all about radiance! So apply shampoos and masks for coloured hair and use (once a month) a ‘blue’ shampoo. These types of shampoo are designed to neutralize any hints of yellow.

Tip of the day. If you want to go for a dishevelled style, get your hands on styling products that’ll hold it all up! Use a gel to create and set your style. Apply to damp hair and style with your fingers until you get the result you’re after. Then dry the style. For a long-lasting hold, use the cool setting of your hairdryer to fix it in place even more.

An XXL hairstyle to get you back into the 60s vibe

Fashion is forever repeating itself. It comes as no surprise that the 60s are once again knocking on our wardrobe doors and popping up in our make-up bags. Here’s a look at a backcombed style for XXL volume. Spotted at Marc Jacobs.

The sixties trend. With each season comes a new set of trends. But it’s not unusual to see a decade from the past as a source of inspiration. The decade that has been the most prominent in Spring-Summer 2013 collections are the 60s. A mixture of swing cuts, geometrical prints, bright colours and mini-skirts. As for beauty, eyes are painted with black eyeliner and hair is pumping up the volume with this handy backcombing technique!

How to create the retro quiffed style. First and foremost, apply a styling mousse to damp hair to add texture and structure. Next, blow dry and straighten your hair using straightening irons or by blowdrying your hair with a hairdryer and round brush for a more flexible result. Then, use a comb to backcomb your hair on the top of your head only. Start by creating a side parting for an asymmetrical separation. Backcomb the inside of the hair so it’s not visible. Finally, tie the lengths into a smooth, low ponytail.

Sinéquanone s'installe dans le

Vieux-Lille

MENS HAIRSTYLE

The Trends of  Spring - Summer 2013

Over the past few seasons it’s been full cuts rather than layered cuts. Both for men and women. Haircuts that offer a range of styling options for men who are getting stricter about their appearance!

For Spring-Summer 2013, Jean Louis David is focusing on full cuts with length and thickness for on-trend styles. The back of the hair is structured and the ends are ever so slightly layered for variation when it comes to styling.

This season we’re seeing two different styles. First, keep your finger on the pulse with a deliberately dishevelled style. Hair is swept effortlessly to the side of your choice. To help with styling, use Jean Louis David Texture Powder. This product will define and set the style whilst providing a matte effect.

Jean Louis David has also taken inspiration from 50s styles for a trendy, ultra-retro look. During this decade, men used lots of pomade for slick, shiny styles. To create this hairstyle, use a styling wax designed to tame flyaway hair and frizz. To optimise the shine, heat the product between your hands before applying to dry hair.
